Cave Canem is committed to the discovery and cultivation of new voices in African American poetry. It began as an all-volunteer effort in 1996. Now it has become a non-profit org. with regional workships, a prize, annual anthologies, readings and events. Fellows include:

Cave Canem is a writer's center with a focus on African American poets and writers, "Committed to the Discovery and cultivation of new voices in African American poetry."

Cave Canem was founded by Cornelius Eady. His collection collection, Brutal Imagination was a finalist for the 2001 National Book Award in Poetry and Toi Derricote, native Detroiter, poet and professor.
