New Crayons: What's New On Our Shelves

Remember when you were a kid and getting new crayons was a big deal? Getting new books holds the same kind of magic for some of us big kids. Every week on Sunday, I post what's new in our box. I think crayons is a pretty cool metaphor for multicultural lit. Every week we receive a book is a good week.

Here's what's new on our shelves:

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin. Received this from the author for review. Looking forward to reading this. In the meantime visit Ms. Jemisin at Epiphany 2.0.
Synopsis
Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian north. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky. There, to her shock, Yeine is named an heiress to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with a pair of cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother's death and her family's bloody history.

With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Yeine will learn how perilous it can be when love and hate - and gods and mortals - are bound inseparably together.

A.D. New Orleans: After the Deluge by Josh Neufeld. Gift from Claudia at The Bottom of Heaven. Happy Blogoversary to Claudia and her sister, Frieda. Claudia wrote a great piece about a critic's failure to appreciate the graphic novels and has written about Katrina as well. Stay tuned.
Synopsis
A.D. follows each of the six from the hours before Katrina struck to its horrific aftermath. Here is Denise, a sixth-generation New Orleanian who will experience the chaos of the Superdome; the Doctor, whose unscathed French Quarter home becomes a refuge for those not so lucky; Abbas and his friend Mansell, who face the storm from the roof of Abbas’s family-run market; Kwame, a pastor’s son whose young life will remain wildly unsettled well into the future; and Leo, a comic-book fan, and his girlfriend, Michelle, who will lose everything but each other. We watch as they make the wrenching decision between staying and evacuating. And we see them coping not only with the outcome of their own decisions but also with those made by politicians, police, and others like themselves--decisions that drastically affect their lives, but over which they have no control.

What did you get in the mail, at the bookstore or at the library?

interesting books, especially A.D. although it sounds too sad for me. I got Good Enough and She's So Money as well as some others :)

Both of these books interest me! I love graphic novels and fantasy, so I'll be on the lookout for them!
