Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto. Never read it, hadn't even heard of it!
I would have to agree with campbele based on a quick, cheating Google search: Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto. I also am not familiar with this book!

We have the book in our library. I happy to loan to either of you if you're interested. Color Online has a book loan program that has sorely gone unused.
