There were 58 books last year published by African American authors alone in YA/MG so this year I'm hoping for at least 70. Yes, I'm dreaming big! Also let me know if I mixed up release dates/if I missed out on the fact that an author is a poc, etc.
December 28, 2010 releases (could go either way as a 2010 release or 2011)
1. Bitter Melon by Cara Chow*
2. Teenie by Christopher Grant*
3. Something Like Hope by Shawn Goodman
4. The Storm Before Atlanta by Karen Schwabach
5. Tutored by Allison Whitenberg

Thank you so much for posting this as early as you did. I am always looking for books of color for my girls to read or for me to recommend.
I have already put several on my wish list.
I would also like to say thank you. This is amazing. Thanks again.
awesome! i can't wait!!!
Thanks for putting Illegal on your list!
Ari,
I've been working on my list for the past couple of days, too. I have a few you don't have and... you have several I don't!
http://campbele.wordpress.com/booklists/booklist-2011/
Wonderful! Also, add Under the Mesquite by Guadalupe Garcia Mc Call.
It's a pretty long list, actually (though not compared to the total # of books published, of course). I'm already very excited to read some of these, and you've put a few more on my radar--thanks! :)
Thanks for putting Shadows on the Moon on your list! It's really amazing to see it up there among all these exciting books.
Thanks so much for this!
Great list; thanks, Ari! So excited to be in such amazing company. Happy holidays and a wonderful New Year to everyone!!
Thank you so much for including me in this list. So many wonderful books - and wonderful to see all shades in YA!
@Donura-I'm thrilled to hear that you've put some of these books on your wishlist. My hope for 2011 is to see more YA/MG books about poc being reviewed and bought. I hope you and your girls find books that you can read and love together :)
@Tea-Thank you for taking the time to comment! I hope this list proves to be useful to you.
@cindy-It was so fun to ocmpile this list, I got excited over many books I discovered (:
@Bettina-No problem, thanks for stopping by!
@campbele-Your list is just WOW you find all the really hard ones. I go for the more 'popular' ones, thank goodness you go above and beyond what I do =) I'm pretty sure you just made my list jump from 40 to 58....
@Jen-Oh thank you, can't believe I forgot about Under the Mesquite and it's quietly stunning cover :D
@aquafortis-I discovered a few new books to put on my radar too. I just want to see the numbers increase each year and maybe one day, the number of books about poc will be fairly close to the number of books not about poc... (or at least the books with a white main character will have a crush on a poc or be best friends with a poc, etc.)
@Zoe-Thank you for stopping by and for writing Shadows on the Moon. It sounds like a fantastic story. By the way, your cover is gorgeous! It makes me so happy =D
@Jama-No problem at all! Hopefully it will start some pre-orders/wishlist shopping
@Neesha-There are some great authors on here and some authors I'm eager to get-to-know through their books.
@Gretchne-Agreed! There are lots of 2011 YA/MG releases I'm looking forward to but I'm especially pleased to see that there will be more widespread representation (= Thanks for stopping by.
Have a stupendous 2011 all!
Come January I won't know which one to pick up first. Thanks for this list, now I'm going off on a hunt to find them.
WOW, WOW, WOW! There are SO MANY good titles here, I don't know which one I'll read first! Thanks SO MUCH for compiling such an AWESOME list . . . will definitely pass this along . . . :)
Have a wonderful New Year!
How did you find this information so soon? This is awesome!! Thank you for your hard work by creating a list for 2011.
Happy New Year
from the Purple Ladybugs Reading Club
@B.A.-I didn't exactly know what book I would pick first although now that it's January, I picked up a 2011 Jan. debut :) A wonderful dilemma to have!
@crystal-Like I said to B.A. Binns, it's awesome not being able to pick which book to read first! May I recommend Jazz in Love? It's the only one on this list I've read so far and I really really liked it. But I bet Slice of Cherry is going to be fantabulous too. So much to choose :D Thank you so much for passing it on.
@Ms. S-Lots of research =D I love compiling lists so I just start avidly searching through Amazon and Goodreads list of debuts and YA novels coming out in 2011. I had help from the Crazy Quilts list too.
I love your Reading club 8D
i was hoping for a list like this as i have been enjoying reading off a list ms. elliott compiled over on fledgling last year! thank you so much for pulling this together!
~L
Wow! What a list! Thanks so much for including LUMINOUS with such amazing company. Hope you enjoy it!
This is an impressive list. I can't wait to read some of these!
This list rocks in so many ways!
Jack Gantos has a new YA in September and Julia Alvarez has a new MG!
This is an awesome list. Thank you for taking the time to compiling it. As an aspiring author, who's also a person of color, it's very inspiring to see there is a space in the market for my book. Maybe one day, one of my books will be on your list :D
Great list!
One addition: Blink & Caution by Tim Wynne-Jones (Spring 2001) features a Canadian First Nations protagonist. Unfortunately, she barely appears and looks pretty darn white in the book's trailer (grr), but she is much more important and definitely described as First Nations in the text.
