November 6, 1990- Sharon Pratt Kelly (formerly Dixon) is elected the first African American woman mayor of an urban city.Sharon Pratt was born in Washington, D.C. She received both undergraduate and law degrees from Howard University, following the career path of her father, a superior court judge, and was a professor in law at Antioch College before returning to Washington in 1977.

Sharon Pratt Dixon was the first female mayor of a major U.S. city.Some didn't want her to be mayor of Washington,D.C.(blacks are the majority) because she is a light skinned black.
